Dancing Flame Gin’s Gig Guide: February
February 24th 2012, By Dancing Flames Gin
Bringing you some rad-a-tat and rock’n'roll local gigs.
Welcome to the first instalment of Dancing Flame Gin’s Gig Guide. In this edition we’re introducing some western/surf bands from Melbourne: the very western ReChords, Mikelangelo and The Tin Star, as well as Beware! Black Holes, a more psychedelic surfing garage band.

The ReChords
FROM: Melbourne, Australia
The ReChords are a 3-piece rock’n'roll band with an acoustic and electric guitar and a double bass and they describe their style as ‘harmonious hillbilly’ (cool, huh?). I always smile at their slick double bass and totally wicked guitar solos. They scrub up mighty fine with their rock’n'roll quiffs and shirts and, best of all, completely discard rockstar arrogance and look like they’re having heaps of fun when they’re performing. See The ReChords at their residency at The Gem in Collingwood every Sunday night.
SOUNDS LIKE: Hank Williams, Bill Munroe, The Farmer Boys, The Louvin Brothers, The Delmore Brothers, The Stanley Brothers (see the theme happening…), Johnny Cash, very early Elvis, Bob Willis & His Texas Playboys, Carl Smith

Mikelangelo and The Tin Star
FROM: Melbourne, Australia
This is a four-piece surf ‘n’ western band with deep, smooth vocals, wicked surf guitar, bass and drums. I’m digging on Mikelangelo’s deep voice, the groovy surfin’ guitar and heartbreakin’ western whistles . Listening to their music must involve wild dancing, without question.

Beware! Black Holes
FROM: Melbourne, Victoria
Besides having one of the sweeter band names around, Beware! Black Holes are four gentleman in Hawaiian shirts who play classical surf instrumental rock. They’re all about kicking beats, groovy bass, cheeky surf garage guitar and cool sixties organs. Watch them in action here.
SOUNDS LIKE: The Chantays, The Ventures, Laika & The Cosmonauts, Jon & The Nightriders, John Barry and Henry Mancini
