Costco auto insurance: who's behind it, and what members get

Costco doesn't insure cars itself. Its auto and home insurance comes from American Family Insurance, with a member discount in most states and extra benefits for Executive members: 24-hour roadside assistance, home lockout help and, in most states, lifetime renewability. Costco doesn't underwrite the policies or pay claims.

From Costco's insurance page and American Family's Costco site, checked October 20, 2026. We don't rate insurers or quote prices.

What Costco members get

State exceptions

StateWhat's different
FloridaNo member discount on home insurance, or on auto policies underwritten by Midvale Indemnity; Costco pricing is available for certain auto policies. Lifetime renewability isn't available on certain policies.
TennesseeNo member discount on home insurance, or on auto policies underwritten by Midvale Indemnity.
MassachusettsThe auto discount is for Executive members only.
California, Maryland, MichiganNo lifetime renewability.
New YorkPolicies aren't obtained through the Costco Insurance Agency, which isn't licensed there.

Is Costco auto insurance cheaper, or any good?

We don't rate insurers or quote premiums: car insurance prices depend on your car, record, ZIP code and coverage, so the only real test is a quote for the same coverage side by side with your current insurer, GEICO, Progressive or anyone else. What's distinctive about the Costco program is the member discount and, for Executive members, roadside help and lifetime renewability with most policies.

To check an insurer's complaint record, look up the underwriting company (from your quote or policy) in the NAIC's Consumer Insurance Search, run by the state insurance regulators' association.
