Costco return policy in Canada
Costco Canada guarantees your satisfaction on almost everything it sells, with no set time limit. The big exception: TVs, computers, phones, other electronics and major appliances must come back within 90 days. A few things, like Shop Cards, gift cards and gold bullion, can't be returned at all.
From Costco.ca's Return Policy FAQs and Membership Conditions & Regulations, checked October 18, 2026.
The 90-day list
Costco Canada takes these back within 90 days of purchase:
- Electronics: televisions, projectors, computers, tablets, cameras, drones, camcorders, digital music players, smart watches and cell phones (cell phone returns also depend on the carrier contract), plus other electronics Costco names.
- Major appliances: refrigerators, wine cellars, washers, dryers, dishwashers, freezers, ranges, range hoods, cooktops, wall ovens, over-the-range microwaves and commercial appliances. Countertop microwaves are not on the list, so they fall under the regular guarantee.
Costco says major appliances come with a two-year manufacturer's warranty and free technical support from Costco Technical and Warranty Service.
What you can't return in Canada
- Shop Cards, gift cards, tickets and e-certificates
- Airline and live event items
- Gold and silver bars, gold bullion and silver coins
- Cigarettes and alcohol, where the law prohibits it
- Custom-made or custom-installed products, except under warranty
Tires and batteries may come with their own limited warranty instead. Diamonds of 1 carat or more are refunded after Costco verifies the stone, which takes about 2 to 5 business days.
How to return something
- Warehouse purchases: bring the item to any Costco warehouse in Canada. Packaging isn't required, though Costco asks you to bring it if you have it.
- Costco.ca orders: return them to any warehouse, ideally with your order confirmation number, or have them picked up. A pickup refund goes back to your original payment method and takes about 3 to 4 weeks.
- Business Centre purchases: any Costco warehouse takes them back; bring the invoice or receipt. See Costco Business Centres in Canada.
- Big items: call your warehouse first if the item needs special transport.
Costco also says all returns are reviewed case by case, and a manager can approve or refuse one.
Common questions
Can I return something to Costco after 30 days, or after a year?
For most items, yes. Costco Canada doesn't set a time limit outside the 90-day electronics and appliance list. It does review each return and a manager decides, so very old or heavily used items aren't guaranteed.
Can I return without a receipt?
Often. Costco says items without a receipt can be returned if they can be verified as Costco products, at the warehouse manager's discretion. Costco also says members who verify their online account can see their warehouse receipts there.
Can someone return a gift from Costco without a membership?
Yes, with the original receipt. Without a receipt, only the member who bought it can return it for a refund.
Can I return clothes or food?
Yes. Neither is on the 90-day list or the no-return list, so they're covered by the satisfaction guarantee.
Can I get my membership fee back?
Yes. Costco Canada will cancel and refund your membership fee at any time if you're not satisfied. Its terms say Executive members who cancel with a refund, or downgrade, don't receive the 2% reward. See Costco Executive in Canada.
Is the Canadian policy different from the U.S. one?
Mostly no: same guarantee and the same 90-day idea. Canada's 90-day list spells out cameras, drones, camcorders, music players and smart watches, and its no-return list includes Shop Cards, gift cards, tickets and gold and silver. See the U.S. return policy.
