Costco Optical: insurance, eye exams, hours and glasses
Costco Optical, often called the Costco vision center, sells glasses and contacts to members, and says "most major vision insurances" are accepted, without publishing a list. Eye exams are done by independent optometrists in or next to most warehouses, which you book by phone, no membership needed. Costco doesn't post optical hours online, so call your warehouse's optical number.

Will my insurance work at Costco Optical?
Costco doesn't say which plans are in network, and VSP and EyeMed don't publish that for Costco in a way we could verify. The eye doctor's office and the optical department can also take different plans: the doctors are independent.
How to book a Costco eye exam
- Who does it: independent doctors of optometry located in or next to most Costco warehouses. They're not Costco staff and set their own fees.
- How to book: Costco's optical page says to call your local warehouse or the optometrist's office directly.
- Membership: not needed for the exam. You do need one to buy glasses or contacts at Costco.
- Price: Costco doesn't publish it; ask the doctor's office.
- Executive 2%: eye exams don't earn it; glasses and contacts aren't on Costco's exclusion list.
Costco Optical hours
Costco doesn't publish optical department hours online. Each warehouse page on Costco.com lists a phone number for its Optical Department but, unlike the pharmacy, no hours: we checked 12 U.S. warehouse pages, from Alaska to Connecticut, and none listed them. The optical department is inside the warehouse, so it can't be open when the warehouse is closed (see Costco hours), but whether it's staffed on a Sunday or late evening varies, so call before you go. The independent optometrist keeps their own hours.
What Costco glasses include
- Anti-reflective coating included on all prescription lenses.
- Free adjustments.
- Ready in 5-7 days for most orders, picked up at your warehouse.
- Designer frames, sunglasses and contacts at member prices; contacts can also be ordered online and delivered.
- Online glasses: single vision and non-prescription only, in about 7-10 business days. Bifocals and progressives go through the warehouse.
- Satisfaction guarantee: bring prescription glasses back for a repair, replacement or refund.
Common questions
Does Costco have a vision center?
Yes. Costco calls it Costco Optical: an optical department inside most warehouses, with an independent optometrist in or next to most of them. Each warehouse page on Costco.com lists the optical department's phone number.
How much is a Costco eye exam without insurance?
Costco doesn't publish exam prices, because the optometrists are independent and set their own fees. Call the doctor's office at your warehouse and ask.
Does Costco Optical take insurance?
Costco says most major vision insurances are accepted at its optical departments, but doesn't publish which. Costco.com's online glasses don't take vision insurance. Check with your insurer and the optical department before you order.
Does Costco Optical take VSP or EyeMed?
We couldn't confirm either from Costco, VSP or EyeMed, and other websites contradict each other. Use your insurer's provider search for your warehouse and call the optical department: if Costco isn't in your network, you may still be able to claim out-of-network benefits.
Does Costco Optical take Medicare or Medicaid?
Medicare.gov says Original Medicare doesn't usually cover glasses, contacts or routine eye exams. The exception is one pair of glasses or contacts after each cataract surgery that implants a lens, bought from a Medicare-enrolled supplier. Medicare Advantage plans may cover vision, and Medicaid vision coverage depends on your state, so ask your plan and the optical department.
Is Costco Optical open on Sunday?
Costco doesn't publish it. Warehouses are open on Sundays, but call your warehouse's optical number to check that the department is staffed.
Do I need an appointment?
For an eye exam, yes: call the optometrist's office or your warehouse. To buy glasses with a valid prescription, Costco just says to bring your prescription to the optical department.
Can I use my FSA or HSA?
Yes. Costco accepts FSA and HSA Visa or Mastercard cards in optical. See what Costco accepts.
