Costco rotisserie chicken: price, ingredients and how long it keeps

Costco's Kirkland Signature rotisserie chicken is $4.99. Once you get it home, USDA says to eat or refrigerate it within 2 hours and finish it within 3 to 4 days. Here's what's in it, how to store and reheat it, and what the 2026 lawsuits are about.

How much is a Costco rotisserie chicken?

$4.99, the price it has been widely reported at for years, even as other prices rose, including in 2022 when the food court's chicken bake and sodas went up. Costco doesn't publish the price online, and it's sold in the deli, not the food court. For the food court menu, see Costco food court prices; for beef, see the whole ribeye steak hack.

What's in it?

It's a seasoned whole chicken, and the full ingredient list is printed on the package. Two ingredients get the most attention: sodium phosphate and carrageenan. Costco has said both help the chicken keep its moisture, texture and consistency during cooking, and that food safety authorities have approved them. They're also at the center of the first lawsuit below.

Is Costco rotisserie chicken healthy?

It's roasted chicken, a good source of protein, and a lot of people buy it as an easy alternative to takeout. The things worth knowing are on the label: it's seasoned, so check the sodium per serving if you're watching salt, and check the ingredients if you avoid phosphates or carrageenan. Costco prints the nutrition facts on the package; we don't repeat numbers here because the recipe can change and Costco doesn't publish them online.

Is it gluten free? Costco doesn't make that claim on its website. If you need to avoid gluten, read the ingredient list and any allergen statement on the package you buy.

How long is Costco rotisserie chicken good for?

WhereHow long
At room temperatureEat or refrigerate within 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F)
In the fridge3 to 4 days
In the freezerSafe to freeze; best within 4 months

That's USDA's guidance for fully cooked rotisserie chicken. If it's still hot and you won't eat it within 2 hours, cut it into pieces and refrigerate it in shallow, covered containers so it cools quickly.

How to reheat Costco rotisserie chicken

You can eat it cold, or reheat it until it reaches 165°F inside, which is USDA's safe temperature for reheated poultry. A food thermometer is the only way to be sure. Oven, microwave or air fryer all work, as long as it gets to 165°F. Smaller pieces reheat faster and more evenly than a whole bird.

The Costco rotisserie chicken lawsuits

Two proposed class actions were filed over the chicken in early 2026. Both are allegations, not findings, and neither had been certified as a class action in the reports we found.

The "no preservatives" lawsuit

Filed January 22, 2026, in federal court in San Diego (Johnston v. Costco). Two California shoppers allege that Costco's signs and website gave the impression the chicken had no added preservatives, while the ingredient list includes sodium phosphate and carrageenan, which they say work as preservatives. Costco said it removed the preservative statements from its signs and online listings to match the label, and that both ingredients are there for moisture and texture.

The salmonella lawsuit

Filed in federal court in Seattle and reported in February 2026. The plaintiff alleges Costco didn't tell shoppers about salmonella test results at its chicken processing plant in Fremont, Nebraska. It covers Kirkland Signature rotisserie chickens and raw chicken parts bought since January 1, 2019. Cooking chicken properly kills salmonella, which is one more reason to reheat leftovers to 165°F.

Status as of October 18, 2026: we found no reports of a ruling or settlement in either case. Court cases change, so check recent news before relying on this.
