How to cancel a Costco membership in Canada

The Primary Member can cancel at any Costco membership counter in Canada and get a refund. Costco Canada will refund the fee at any time if you're not satisfied. If you're an Executive member, there's a catch: Costco.ca's terms say you don't receive the 2% reward if you cancel with a refund or downgrade.

How to cancel

1. Go to the membership counter at any Costco warehouse in Canada. Costco.ca says this is how the Primary Member cancels and gets a refund.
2. Bring your membership card. Costco says it's the Primary Member who cancels, so a household cardholder should send the Primary Member.
3. The refund is handled at the counter. If you paid with a CIBC Costco Mastercard or another card, ask how it will be returned.

Costco.ca's help pages don't describe cancelling online. For other membership changes, Costco Canada's Member Services number is 1-800-463-3783.

Executive members: what you give up

Costco.ca's Membership Conditions say Executive members who downgrade to Gold Star or Business, or cancel and receive a refund, won't receive a Reward. So before you cancel or downgrade, check how much 2% reward you've built up this year: if it's more than the fee you'd get back, keeping the membership until the reward arrives may be worth more. The counter can tell you both numbers.

Auto-renewal

Costco Canada's auto-renewal runs on a Mastercard or Visa, credit or debit. Costco says changes to auto-renewal can take up to 2 days to take effect, so make them well before your renewal date.

Can I give or transfer my membership to someone else?

No. Costco Canada memberships aren't transferable; a card needs the member's own number and photo. Members can bring up to two guests, but only members can buy.

Is it different from cancelling in the U.S.?
